Research Interests

Sue Cox is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Education and Lifelong Learning at UEA where she is involved in teaching and research. She is course director of the MA (Advanced Educational Practice) and teaches on the Primary PGCE course. Both her teaching and research are informed by her background in philosophy of education. She is interested in working with teachers on understanding practice in order to improve it and enhance the educational opportunities of children.

Her research interests centre on Primary Curriculum and Pedagogy. Two main strands of her research are art education and children’s participation, both in the primary phase. In the area of art education she is particularly interested in the role of art in meaning making, particularly the significance of children’s early mark making in relation to children’s thinking and learning.

In the area of children’s participation she is concerned with developing children’s role in decision making in areas that affect their lives, particularly in their school settings but also in their communities. This has also included a focus on children as researchers. The research projects she has carried out in these areas have used action research methodology, to effect change, and have highlighted the need for children to be involved in decisions about learning and teaching as well as the need for them to be active citizens not only in the future but in the here and now. Her interest in action research builds on a long standing interest in this approach to the improvement of practice and also on earlier work in this area, related to the development of her own practice in teacher education.

Recent research projects include:

  • 2002/2003 ‘Empowering Children through Visual Communication’ (funded by CfBT).This project explored how visual means could be used to improve communication, participation and decision making between children and between adults and children. Communication in school councils was the starting point.
  • 2004/6 ‘Children Decide: power, participation and purpose in the primary classroom’ (funded by CfBT). The findings of the previous project, particularly around power relations, gave rise to this second project, which aimed for children and teachers to develop a more collaborative approach to making decisions.
  • 2003/5 ‘Exploring and Developing Alternatives to Linear Models of Curriculum Planning and Teaching in Primary Classrooms’), a project funded by ‘Creative Partnership Project’ (Arts Council and DfES). This followed up her interests in children’s role in curriculum decision making, focusing on the development of a ‘process’ approach to planning, working to develop practice with a group of primary school teachers.
  • In 2006/7 she is running an ESRC seminar series (with Anna Robinson Pant and in collaboration with the universities of Birmingham and Leeds) entitled ‘Children as Decision Makers’ which includes a cross-cultural perspective on children’s participation and the role of children as researchers.
