CARE (Centre for Applied Research in Education)

A centre for research and evaluation in education and the professions.

Serving lifelong learning in the public and private sectors.

Activities... Applied research including action research; programme and policy evaluation; consultancy; methodological development; research training; research degrees.

Orientation and philosophy... Field-based enquiry aimed at the improvement of educational policy and practice across the professions and the enhancement of democracy.

Excellence in research and training...The School of Education and Lifelong Learning, of which CARE is a part, receives the highest rating by OFSTED inspectors for its teacher training programmes.

Applied Research in Education

Over 35 years, CARE has developed and field tested a conception of Applied Research as a form of systematic critical enquiry carried out within the context of action to effect worthwhile educational change.

CARE was established in 1970, UEA providing a permanent home for the core team of the Humanities Curriculum Project, a major curriculum project of the 1960s. At that time UEA had no School of Education (and did not envisage one) and so CARE was seen as a research centre essentially engaged in external applied research projects in the education sector. CARE quickly established itself, nationally and internationally, as a centre of activity in two areas: action research and program evaluation, and added to its activities a post graduate training programme which attracted many international students.

In 1980 CARE was incorporated in the newly established School of Education, along with the Keswick Hall College of Education, a long established Norwich institution, which brought the Centre into more direct contact with teacher education and continuing professional development programmes. The Centre continued to expand its interests in Education and Training, working in police training, the health sector and the arts and in parallel its reputation as distinctive centre in terms of developing research methodologies that addressed issues of organisational and curriculum change.

CARE continues as research and research training centre with a distinctive methodological approach and working in multidisciplinary ways in diverse settings. Currently we are particularly active in educational development in the developing world, in the arts, in higher education and in the use of mobile and multimedia technologies. Methodologically, we have several projects looking at the active engagement of participants in the research process (children included) and we are exploring new forms of archiving and searching case based archives. Our students remain a multinational and multicultural group and almost all of them return to their home countries on graduating with the aim of developing programmes of applied research in education.

Pedagogy and Engagement with Learning

Research within this group, led by Haydn, is broadly focused around the areas of (i) improving the engagement of young people with education, (ii) pedagogy and classroom management and (iii) ICT in the classroom.

Training and Development Agency (formally Teacher Training Agency)
Members of the group have been very successful in recent years in securing a number of awards for funded research from the Training and Development Agency to pursue research related teaching and learning issues. For more details of these projects follow: Training and Development Agency Research Website

Creative Partnerships
Members of the group were successful in being awarded funding for a number of projects by Creative Partnerships (Norfolk). The Creative Partnerships network is a national organisation organised by the Arts Council and funded by the DfES (www.creative-partnerships.com). Whilst each project has a different focus, covering both primary and secondary age phases and a range of curriculum areas, all projects were based on the idea of creating Action Research networks to promote innovative and creative approaches to teaching and learning in school subjects. For more details of these projects follow: Creative Partnerships Website

Becta (British Educational Communications Technology Agency)
Two members of the group were awarded a Becta Research Bursary to identify the key factors which promote trainee teachers' use of ICT in subject teaching: Executive Summary A full report is available on the Becta web site at: http://www.becta.org.uk/research/research.cfm?section=1&id=4821

Centre for British Teachers (CfBT)
A member of the group was awarded funding from the CfBT for a project focussing on the KS3 Strategy. This resulted in a number of school based projects focusing on developing the use of plenaries in lessons. University based staff, mentors and student teachers collaborated to develop classroom practice relating to building on pupils' prior knowledge through the planning and delivery of lessons which focused on strengthening planning for plenaries. The project results can be viewed at the following website: http://www.uea.ac.uk/edu/cfbt/ along with a number of lessons taught across three subject areas (MFL, Geography and Mathematics).

Developing Mentoring Skills - Primary Modern Languages
A Partnership Development School Project funded by the Training and Development Agency.
A member of the group along with a school partner gained funding from the TDA to support the development of mentoring skills with primary school mentors working specifically with Primary Modern Languages PGCE students. The project ran over a period of two years. For further details of the project see: http://www.uea.ac.uk/edu/pylanguage
Research in Mathematics Education

Our research interests range across the educational levels (primary, secondary and tertiary) and the workplace, as well as across educational research methods. We have a particular interest in qualitative studies of mathematical thinking, learning, understanding and teaching. Our work has been supported by funders such as the ESRC, the Nuffield Foundation, the Higher Education Academy, the Learning and Teaching Support Network, the Teacher Training Agency, the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada etc. Our collaboration, both in teaching exchanges and research, with several EU countries have been supported by the Erasmus, Socrates and Comenius programmes. Our work focuses on four main themes: (i) teaching and learning of undergraduate mathematics; (ii) disaffection in the secondary mathematics classroom; (iii) mathematical understanding in the workplace; (iv) mathematics in the primary years.

In 2002 UEA hosted PME26 (26th Annual Conference of the International Group for Psychology in Mathematics Education) and in 2003 we co-organised the National Conference of the Mathematical Association. Research in Mathematics Education, the Routledge international journal of BSRLM, the British Society for Research into the Learning of Mathematics, is based here (the group’s co-ordinator, Elena Nardi, is Joint Editor in Chief). We have a presence at all major national and international conferences and an increasing number of international collaborations (e.g. Canada, Israel, Australia).

We work closely with colleagues from other mathematics education research groups both in the UK and abroad as well as with UEA’s School of Mathematics and its Further Mathematics Centre. We run a research seminar several times a year and recent external invited speakers have included Tim Rowland, Lara Alcock, Hilary Povey and Lulu Healy. Academic visitors have included Victor Giraldo (Brazil), Theodossios Zachariades & Irene Biza (Greece) and Alejandro S. González-Martín (Spain/Canada).

We offer a friendly and supportive environment of regular group meetings, informal working lunches and public seminars. Furthermore the School offers a thriving community of full-time research students who, in addition to two supervisors, are supported by weekly research methods seminars, have their own just refurbished study base within the School and access to excellent library facilities, including subscription to all the major mathematics education research journals. There is an increasing number of research students whose research is in mathematics education on all of the School's research degrees: PhD (Full-time and Part-time), EdD and MA (Full-time and Part-time) and in 2007-8 we also launched an MA in Mathematics Education programme.
