American perspective on Times HigherSubmitted by Dominik Lukes on Mon, 25/02/2008 - 12:43.

I came across this post on a language blog of significant reputation. Although I tend to disagree with much of the linguistics on the blog, I thought this was an interesting micro-rant. Times Higher as a hobbyist magazine with the hobby being whining, indeed! It would be interesting to see some of the local perspective. The majority of articles in Times Higher Education seem to be devoted to whining; I had mistakenly thought it was a magazine of news about higher education, but in fact it is a remarkable case of a hobbyist's magazine, focusing on the very popular hobby of grumbling about UK universities, administrators, and students. This was in the context of discussing this article complaining about the level of spelling and grammar 'accuracy' of today's students. A popular pastime (but surely not exclusive to Times Higher). |
