Teaching Qualifications: PGCE and MA with QTS


Teaching is a creative, challenging and invigorating profession which offers great prospects, solid support and a wide variety of activities and opportunities.

The Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) is a one-year, full-time course aimed at graduates wishing to teach in Primary or Secondary schools.

The PGCE programme also offers an innovative route into teaching with the option for studying for a MA degree with Qualified Teacher Status. This will offer graduates who have a particular interest in research-based practice to develop relevant skills to enhance their careers.

Intrinsic to our excellence in research is the highly acclaimed Centre for Applied Research in Education which specialises in the field of applied research and the development of research methods contributing to understanding and improvement in policy and practice in education, training and management. Its national and international projects span a range of professions and are concerned with issues of organisational change in training and education; the management and delivery of education and training; project, programme and policy evaluation; and research relating to schools, communities, curriculum development and course design.


TAUGHT DEGREES:

MA in Advanced Educational Practice

This three year part-time Master of Arts course offers those working in an educational setting the opportunity to reflect on their practice with the intention of deepening understanding and developing ideas.

Postgraduate Diploma/MA in Counselling

There are two components to this award: Accredited by the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy, the Postgraduate Diploma component runs over a period of one year and is designed to offer training of sufficient duration and depth to equip the successful course member to practise professionally in the role of counsellor. Students may opt to receive a Postgraduate Diploma after the first year or progress to the full research-based MA in Counselling.

MA in Education

This one-year, full-time course is intended for experienced education professionals. Students follow a core programme around the themes of teaching, learning and assessment, including experience with and discussion of the role of new technologies. In parallel, students choose specialist topics relevant to their own needs and interests which they are encouranged to explore through supervised qualitative enquiry.

Postgraduate Diploma/MA in Focusing and Experiential Psychotherapy

The MA in Education course consists of two taught units and a dissertation and is intended for experienced education professionals, particularly those with an interest in teacher education. Students follow a core programme around the themes of teaching, learning and assessment, including experience with and discussion of the role of new technologies. In parallel, students choose specialist topics relevant to their own needs and interests which they are encouraged to explore through supervised qualitative enquiry.

RESEARCH DEGREES:

We offer the following research degree programmes:

  • Master of Arts by Research (one year full-time, two years part-time)
  • Master of Philosophy (two years full-time, or four years part-time)
  • Doctor of Philosophy (three years full-time, or six years part-time)
  • Doctorate in Education (minimum of four years part-time).

The periods indicated for each degree represent the period of study, after which, in the case of all degrees, there is one year of Registration Only time if required in which to write up and submit the thesis.
