Research InterestsMy first degree was in Anthropology and I continue to favour an ethnographic approach to my research. My PhD thesis, drawing on my experiences as a researcher on a multidisciplinary research project in partnership with the NHS, explored the use of fictionalised patient narratives in the education of health professionals constructed using data from interviews with stroke patients and their carers. The thesis also included my own narrative in the form of firsthand field accounts as a sort of commentary on the process of conducting the research, presenting a contrasting perspective to conventional academic tone and giving colour and context by revealing the inner struggles of the researcher. I explore using alternative forms of writing in my work - I could be regarded as a writer of ‘ethnographic fiction' - and currently I am interested in using narrative as a pedagogical device to understand and represent the experience of chronic illness sufferers and their (re)construction of self.
