Research Interests

Dr Adam Longcroft is a Lecturer in Local and Regional Studies and is the Academic Director for all Archaeology, History, Art History and Landscape Studies courses offered within the School's Continuing Education programme.

He graduated with a degree in history from the University College of Wales, and also holds an MA and a PhD from the University of East Anglia.

His research interests include landscape history, vernacular architecture and the teaching of archaeology in higher education.

Adam is the School Director for Teaching and Learning in EDU and represents the School on a number of internal and external committees. He is the founding Chair of the Norfolk Historic Buildings Group, a former president of the Norfolk Archaeological and Historical Research Group and a member of the Council of the Norfolk & Norwich Archaeological Society.

Projects

Adam is involved with other colleagues at UEA and City College Norwich, in designing and implementing articulated progression routes for students studying on UEA-validated two-year foundation degrees. This project will result in the approval of a new part-time Foundation Degree 'top-up' programme in Professional Studies which enables students to gain an Honours Degree from UEA by building on their prior studies on Foundation Degrees.

Longcroft, A., (ed), 'The Historic Buildings of New Buckenham', Journal of the Norfolk Historic Buildings Group, Vol 2 (2005), 227 printed pages, including an 80-page analytical introduction. Vol 2 of the NHBG Journal comprises a ground-breaking multi-disciplinary study of the historic buildings of a planned Norman town (New Buckenham).

Longcroft, A., & Morgan, V., (eds), 'Norfolk Historic Buildings: A Research Agenda for the Future', Journal of the Norfolk Historic Buildings Group, (Norwich, 2003), including sole-authored essay 'Vernacular Architecture in Norfolk: Past Research, Future Objectives', pp.9-20. The published proceedings of the inaugural conference of the Norfolk Historic Buildings Group, and Vol 1 of the NHBG Journal. The journal was reviewed very positively by leading academics in two national journals: Vernacular Architecture, and Post-Medieval Archaeology.

Longcroft, A., (2002), 'Plan-Forms in Smaller Post-Medieval Houses: A Case Study from Norfolk', Vernacular Architecture, 33, pp.34-56. The first systematic analysis of plan-forms in Norfolk considered within a national context. Published in the leading (refereed) national academic journal on vernacular architecture.

The first systematic, analytical study of the hearth tax assessments of the 1660s in relation to Norfolk. Published in the prestigious county journal of archaeology & history.

Additional Information

As School Director of Teaching & Learning in the School of Education and Lifelong Learning, Adam has a key role in assuring the quality of EDU courses and in shaping the School's teaching programme and strategy. Adam is passionately committed to widening access in higher education and has been at the forefront of developing innovative approaches to teaching and assessment which have succeeded in engaging students fully in the learning process.

Adam was the sole winner of the prestigious Higher Education Academy Award for 'Excellence in Teaching History in Universities' in 2005.
